How To Know You Need To Recharge

Have you ever had a vacation that was actually relaxing? Or even just one night where you had no responsibilities and didn’t have to wake up at a certain time the next day? What about a long weekend where you just did the minimum that was necessary?

Those are some of the most refreshing times! When we get stuck in our routine, or life is uncontrollably stressful, sometimes that’s what our mind and body needs. Just a good old recharge!

If it’s possible, I definitely recommend doing something like this every few months to avoid completely crashing and needing a hard recharge. But, if that’s not possible, here’s how to know you need to stop what you are doing and take a really good recharge.

You Are Tired

Have you ever been so tired that you slept a full 8 hours at night, woke up exhausted, took a 2 hour nap during the day, and still went to bed that night just absolutely spent? Yeah, being consistently tired is a really good sign that you are due to recharge and rest!

You Are Irritable

Do you snap at people at the tiniest things? Does the sound of that specific person breathing just make you want to scream? Do you wake up frustrated and well, irritated? Irritability is your body’s way of communicating to your mind that it is done. It needs a break.

You Have Trouble Focusing

Can you read a whole page of a book or a memo and realize that you just retained zero of that information and now you have to attempt to read it again? Are you forgetting things easily? Do you find yourself completely spacing out during conversations? Your brain could be on overload.

You Just Don’t Want To Do Anything

Do you come home at 5pm from work, change into your pajamas, and just sit in front of the tv for the rest of the night? Do you avoid texting back friends or family because you just don’t have the energy, physically or mentally, to go out? Do you come up with excuses to get out of things or cancel at the last minute? Do you just want to stay home all the time? That’s totally your body telling you that something is not right.

You Crave Sugar Or Unhealthy Snacks

Do you eat ice cream or a sugary snack every night when you come home? Do you just crave your special snack all day long at work? Do you reach for a bag of chips instead of dinner? That can either be a bad habit, a sugar addiction caused from an unbalanced diet, or a cry for help from your body that things are not cool between the two of you.

If you have a few of these things going on, you may need to seriously evaluate if you need to rest and recharge. Do it when you first notice it so

  1. You treat people and yourself like dirt for a shorter period of time
  2. You don’t have to take a huge break from things

If you catch it early, just take a short weekend away from yourself. Preferably try and do it someplace that is not your own home, so you aren’t thinking of all the things that you need to do all the time. Honestly, no matter how much you do, there will always be more.

If you don’t catch it early, take a long weekend away. Work a half day on Friday, or take all of Friday off and get away! Don’t do anything if you don’t want to. Lie in bed and rest, read, go for short walks in nature, do some yoga, go to a quiet museum, eat all healthy foods, do something where your brain does not have to work very hard. Do something that is quiet. Shut your phone off. Don’t watch the news.

Rest. Recharge. Fill your body up and give yourself some self care so that you can pour back into others.

I seriously hope that you are able to get the rest you need when you need it. Sometimes it’s a matter of making our health our first priority and investment.
